Pay It Forward: The True Measure of Success

There are people we look up to, those we hold in high regard—their words inspire us, and their actions motivate us. Some of these people will be our biggest cheerleaders… until we start leveling up. It’s all good until we grow, until we reach a new stage, until we begin to operate on the same level as them.

But here’s the truth: growth isn’t a threat. It’s proof of impact. And real leadership, real success, is about paying it forward—not gatekeeping opportunities out of fear that someone else might rise, too.

I think about the doors that have been opened for me, the mentors who poured into me, and the opportunities I’ve been blessed with. None of it was meant just for me. Every day, I strive to extend the same support and create pathways for others to succeed, just as others once did for me.

So here’s the challenge: Are you paying it forward? Or are you unintentionally being someone’s stumbling block?

  • If someone needs practicum hours, review the requirements—can you help? If not, offer a recommendation.
  • If someone is conducting research, take a moment to review their study. If your school or district can’t support it, help them explore other avenues.
  • If you’re not available to be a guest speaker, pass along a trusted recommendation.
  • If you’re a hairstylist, barber, makeup artist, or nail tech and can’t take a client, refer them to someone reputable instead of leaving them searching.
  • If you’re a mechanic and don’t have time for a repair, share a trusted shop or technician.
  • If you own or know of a quality car wash, local bakery, or event space—spread the word.
  • If you hear about job openings, scholarships, or business grants, share them.

Information isn’t power when it’s hoarded—it’s power when it’s shared. The success of others does not take away from your own. Stop holding info. Lift as you climb. Pay it forward.
