Remember a few weeks ago when the semester was brand new?
The calendar was organized. The syllabus had been read. Maybe you bought a new planner, created a color-coded schedule, and told yourself, This semester, I’m staying ahead.
Cute.
Now we’re about a month in.
The readings are reading.
The assignments are assigning.
Work is still working.
And somehow, life did not clear its schedule just because you enrolled in school.
Welcome to the part of the semester where it gets real.
So…How Is That Plan Working?
I’m not asking to call you out.
I’m asking because about a month into a semester is actually a great time to check in with yourself.
Not at midterms.
Not when you’re completely overwhelmed.
Not when you’re staring at three assignments due in the same week wondering how you got there.
Now.
Think back to the promises you made yourself at the beginning of the semester.
Maybe you said you weren’t going to wait until Sunday night to start your assignments.
Maybe you planned to read a little every day.
Maybe you were going to protect your writing time.
Maybe you promised yourself you would ask for help sooner this time.
How’s that going?
And if the answer is not great, that’s okay. The point isn’t to beat yourself up about it.
The point is to adjust before a rough week becomes a rough semester.
Your Real Life Is Giving You Data
By now, you know more than you did during week one.
You know whether that Tuesday-night study block actually works.
You know which course requires more time than you expected.
You know whether you can realistically read after a full day of work or whether your brain has clocked out by then.
You know which assignments you tend to procrastinate on.
You know what’s competing for your attention.
That’s useful information.
Sometimes we hold onto the plan we created at the beginning of the semester because changing it feels like we failed.
You didn’t fail.
You learned.
And now you can build a plan around the life you’re actually living instead of the life you imagined when you looked at the syllabus four weeks ago.
Don’t Wait Until You’re Drowning to Adjust
This is your September check-in.
Pull out your syllabus.
Look at what’s coming—not just this week, but over the next few weeks.
Where are the heavy weeks?
What can you start earlier?
What needs to come off your plate?
Where do you need support?
And what’s one thing that clearly isn’t working that you need to change?
You don’t need to reinvent your entire semester.
You may just need to make one good adjustment.
Because we’re far enough into the semester to know what’s working—but still early enough to do something about what isn’t.
The semester is real now.
The question is: What are you going to adjust?
